Conversion Varnish Care Guide

Other than our shelves, all of our products are finished with conversion varnish. We recommend dusting with a polish-moistened or damp cloth following the grain. Remove residues such as smoke, cooking vapors and body oils with a soft, lint-free cloth and a mild detergent or soap and warm water. Keep wood surfaces dry - wipe up spills, splatters and water spots as soon as they occur and dry surfaces immediately with a soft cloth. Polishes (not silicones or waxes) are the best choice for cleaning your wood finish. They contain detergents to clean the surface, emulcifiers to help the polish last longer and remove residue better, and mineral oil to create a barrier against dirt and moisture.

Best Practices

Avoid cleaning with a dishcloth or sponge, as it may contain remnants of grease or detergents. Never use scouring pads, steel wool, or powdered cleaners. Do not use products containing bleach, ammonia, or abrasive additives, and do not allow oven cleaners to come into contact with the wood finish. Avoid placing small appliances where heat is directed onto the wood surface. Minimize contact with liquids, as excessive moisture exposure can cause permanent damage. Avoid draping damp cloths or dishtowels on the wood surface.

Rubio Monocoat Care Guide

Keeping dirt and grit off of wooden furniture will greatly extend the life of any finish. There are 2 options available for cleaning your oiled furniture.

  1. Damp rag
  2. Use Rubio Monocoat Soap or Surface Care Spray (recommended cleaners)

Clean using a damp rag.

Using a damp rag with clean water is sufficient for the regular cleaning of your oiled furniture. Remember that wood and water do not mix, so using a damp rag means your rag should not be “dripping wet” when cleaning a wood surface. Clean using a damp rag with water as needed but avoid doing so daily. Clean water will not always get your furniture clean.

Clean using Rubio Monocoat Soap or Surface Care Spray

Surface Care Spray or properly diluted Rubio Monocoat Soap are the only recommended cleaners for your Rubio Monocoat oil finished furniture. These cleaners will remove all dirt and grease thoroughly, without leaving a film or affecting the matte natural look of the wood. Again, be sure to only use a damp rag and not saturate the floor with liquid.

Rubio Monocoat Soap is extremely concentrated, and therefore, extremely economical. One liter of Rubio Monocoat Soap will make approximately 26 gallons of cleaning solution. When Rubio Monocoat soap is mixed with water into a cleaning solution, it is called Surface Care Spray. Mix Rubio Monocoat Soap with water at a ratio of 1:100.

Surface Care Spray is the mixed and ready-to-use version of Rubio Monocoat Soap. It is available in an easy-to-use spray bottle. Surface Care Spray is great to have on hand for spot cleaning areas in the event of a spill or accident. How to use Spray Surface Care Spray onto the surface and clean using a microfiber cloth or rag.
